Your day, your way

Why charter a private catamaran to the Blue Lagoon?

The Blue Lagoon on Comino is Malta's most popular swimming destination — and for good reason. The sheltered bay between Comino and Cominotto creates a natural pool with turquoise water, white sand on the seabed and visibility that reaches ten metres on a calm day. But getting there on a crowded ferry means sharing the space with hundreds of other visitors, queuing for a spot on the rocks, and leaving when the timetable dictates.

A private catamaran charter changes the experience completely. Your skipper knows exactly when the lagoon is quietest — usually before 11:00 and after 15:00 — and can anchor in spots that the ferries and luzzus cannot reach. While day-trippers crowd the main beach, your group is swimming off the stern with paddleboards, snorkels and inflatables in water so clear you can count the fish beneath you.

Both La Zingara (Lagoon 450, up to 28 passengers) and Chardonnay (Lagoon 440, up to 24 passengers) depart from Sliema and reach the Blue Lagoon in around ninety minutes of relaxed sailing along the north coast of Malta. Along the way the skipper points out St Paul's Islands, Mellieha Bay and the dramatic cliffs of Comino's south side — sights you simply miss on a ferry transfer.

What to expect on a full-day Blue Lagoon charter

Your day begins at 10:00 at Sliema's Tigne Point marina. The skipper briefs the group, shows you the safety gear and gives a quick tour of the boat — head, galley, shaded saloon and the aft deck where most of the action happens. Once lines are cast you motor out of the harbour, hoist the sails when the breeze allows, and settle in for the crossing.

The first swim stop is usually the Blue Lagoon itself. The catamaran anchors bow-and-stern so you have a stable platform for jumping, swimming and paddleboarding. Snorkelling gear is on board and the rocky edges of the lagoon are home to wrasse, damselfish and the occasional octopus. If conditions suit, the skipper may suggest a second stop at Crystal Lagoon — a smaller, deeper inlet on the west side of Comino that most tourists never see.

Lunch is up to you. Most groups bring a cooler of salads, bread, cheese and cold meats and fire up the gas BBQ for burgers or sausages. The boat has a full-size fridge and a freshwater deck shower, so you can eat, swim, rinse and repeat all afternoon. By late afternoon the skipper weighs anchor and sails back towards Sliema, arriving around 18:00 — tanned, tired and already talking about next year.

Choosing the right catamaran for your group

La Zingara is the larger of the two boats and suits groups of 12 to 28 passengers. Her wide trampolines and covered cockpit make her ideal for birthday celebrations, corporate team days and stag or hen parties where you want space to move around. Chardonnay is more intimate — perfect for couples, small family gatherings or a day out with close friends (up to 24 passengers). Both boats carry identical water-sports equipment and BBQ facilities, so the main difference is size and atmosphere.

Not sure which boat fits your plans? Compare La Zingara and Chardonnay side-by-side or send us a message and we'll recommend the best option for your group size and budget.

Frequently asked questions about Blue Lagoon charters

Can we stop at other bays besides the Blue Lagoon? Yes — the skipper can add Crystal Lagoon, Santa Marija Bay or the Comino Caves depending on weather and your preferences. The itinerary is fully flexible.

Is the charter per person or per boat? All our pricing is per boat, not per person. That means a group of 20 on La Zingara pays the same as a group of 10 — it's always better value with more people on board.

What if the weather is bad? The skipper monitors conditions daily. If wind or swell makes the Blue Lagoon uncomfortable, we'll suggest an alternative route — often the sheltered west coast of Malta or Mellieha Bay — or reschedule at no extra charge.

Do we need to bring anything? Sunscreen, towels, food and drinks. Everything else — snorkels, SUPs, inflatables, BBQ and fuel — is included in the charter price.
