Sunset cruise Malta — golden hour over Valletta bastions

Perfect for any occasion

What's on board

Why a sunset cruise is the best way to end a day in Malta

Malta's west-facing coastline puts on a show every evening. The sun drops behind the bastions of Valletta, painting the limestone gold and the sea a deep amber — and there is simply no better seat for it than the deck of a private catamaran. A sunset cruise takes you away from the crowded waterfront bars and restaurant terraces and puts you in the middle of the picture, glass in hand, with the entire horizon to yourself.

Both La Zingara and Chardonnay depart from Sliema's Tigne Point around two to three hours before sunset. The exact departure time shifts with the season — 17:00 in early summer, 18:30 at the height of July — so the skipper always times the route to put you in the perfect spot as the light turns golden. Most sunset charters run for approximately three hours, returning to harbour just after dark with the Valletta skyline lit up behind you.

Sunset cruise routes along the Malta coast

The classic route heads north from Sliema past St Julian's and the Portomaso tower, then follows the coast towards Ghajn Tuffieha and Golden Bay. The skipper drops anchor in a sheltered cove for a swim while the sun is still warm, then repositions the catamaran so the bow faces west for the main event. On calm evenings the boat drifts slowly along the Dingli cliffs — the highest point on Malta — as the sun sinks into the Mediterranean.

An alternative route sails south towards Valletta's Grand Harbour. You pass the Three Cities, Fort St Angelo and the breakwater before turning back along the harbour mouth. This route is particularly popular for proposals and romantic celebrations because the Valletta skyline at dusk is unforgettable — hundreds of years of limestone architecture bathed in rose and gold light.

The skipper is flexible and will tailor the route to your group's preferences, the wind direction and the sea conditions on the day. If you have a specific bay or backdrop in mind, just let us know when you book.

Perfect for proposals, birthdays and corporate events

Proposals and romantic evenings: La Zingara's foredeck trampolines are the most popular spot for popping the question — surrounded by open sea with the sunset directly ahead. We can pre-rig discreet Bluetooth speakers for your chosen playlist and chill the bottle you've brought ahead of time so it's waiting for the moment. Several guests have asked us to arrange a photographer on a tender boat nearby for candid shots — get in touch and we'll help coordinate.

Birthday celebrations and hen parties: Chardonnay's compact layout keeps everyone together, which makes it ideal for groups of 8 to 20 who want a lively atmosphere. The gas BBQ lets you cook dinner on board, and the Bluetooth sound system covers the whole cockpit. Most birthday groups bring their own cake and decorations — we provide the venue, the views and the memories.

Corporate sundowners and team building: For larger groups of 20 to 28, La Zingara offers enough space for networking, a BBQ buffet and even short speeches from the foredeck. Several Malta-based gaming and fintech companies charter the fleet regularly for new-joiner events, quarterly celebrations and client entertainment.

What to bring on a sunset cruise

The boat is equipped with everything you need for the cruise itself — the skipper, fuel, water toys, fridge, gas BBQ and all safety gear are included in the charter price. You just need to bring the food and drinks you want to enjoy on board. Most groups pick up platters, bread and cold cuts from a Sliema deli on the way to the marina, then cook burgers or sausages on the BBQ as the sun goes down. If you'd rather not stop at the supermarket, we can point you to trusted local suppliers who deliver ready-made packages to the boat before departure — ask us for details.

Pack sunscreen for the first hour (the late-afternoon sun is still strong), a light layer for after sunset when the breeze picks up, and a towel if you plan to swim. The water stays warm enough for comfortable swimming from May through to late October.

Frequently asked questions about sunset cruises

How long is the cruise? Approximately three hours — you depart roughly two hours before sunset and return about an hour after. The exact timing varies by season.

Can we extend the cruise into the night? Yes. Late-night add-ons are available — the boat has LED cockpit lighting and navigation lights, so you can continue cruising along the coast after dark. This is popular for birthday and proposal celebrations.

Is it suitable for children? Absolutely. Families regularly book sunset cruises with children of all ages. The catamaran is stable, the cockpit is enclosed, and the skipper keeps a watchful eye on swimmers. Life jackets in children's sizes are on board.

What happens if the weather turns? If conditions are unsafe the skipper will offer to reschedule at no extra charge. Light wind or overcast skies rarely affect the cruise — in fact some of the most dramatic sunsets happen behind thin cloud.
