What "private" actually means in the Blue Lagoon context
"Private" is one of the most overused words in Malta boat charters, so it's worth being precise. On a private Blue Lagoon catamaran charter with us, the entire vessel is yours for the day — you and your group, your skipper and your crew. There are no other guests, no fixed itinerary, no shared swim stops, and no other parties to coordinate with. The boat departs and returns when your group is ready, and the route is finalised on the water based on wind, swell and what you actually feel like doing.
Compare that to a shared Blue Lagoon trip on a 100-passenger commercial boat, where you board at a set time, sit in an assigned area, swim during a 90-minute window with 99 strangers, and leave when the boat leaves. Both are valid products at very different price points — but they're not the same experience and shouldn't be compared on price alone.
The day flow on a private Blue Lagoon charter
Our standard private Blue Lagoon catamaran charter runs 10:00–18:00 from Sliema Ferries. A typical day looks like this:
- 09:45 — meet the crew at the Sliema pontoon. Quick safety brief, stow provisions in the fridge, and we cast off.
- 10:00–11:00 — sail north along Malta's coastline toward Comino. Coffee, cold drinks, deck time. Most groups spend this leg sunbathing on the foredeck or watching for the first sight of Comino's cliffs.
- 11:00–13:30 — first swim stop. In peak season we typically start at Crystal Lagoon or one of the sea caves to dodge the day-tripper boats. SUPs and snorkel gear come out, and the gas BBQ goes on if you've brought lunch.
- 13:30–15:30 — onboard lunch and second swim. Anchor, eat, swim, repeat — this is the part of the day that most groups remember.
- 15:30–17:00 — Blue Lagoon itself. By this point the day boats are on their way back to Sliema, the lagoon is noticeably quieter, and the late-afternoon light is the best of the day for photographs.
- 17:00–18:00 — sail back to Sliema. Sunset is often visible from the back of the boat in shoulder season; in peak summer you'll be docked before it sets.
The order is flexible. If wind dictates a different route, the skipper adjusts on the day. If your group wants to skip lunch and stay in the water longer, we skip lunch. The point of "private" is that the day belongs to you.
Capacity and which boat to choose
We operate two catamarans side by side, both Lagoon-design and both crewed by the same team:
- La Zingara — Lagoon 450. Up to 28 guests. Happiest with 8–20. The bigger of the two, with more deck space for sunbathing, more shaded seating in the cockpit, and the larger swim platform. Best fit for families, mixed groups, and any party where some guests will want shade and others will want full sun.
- Chardonnay — Lagoon 440. Up to 24 guests. A slightly more intimate layout, very well suited to groups of 12–20 who want a single shared space rather than spreading across decks. Often the preferred choice for proposals, smaller celebrations and corporate sundowners that flow into a sit-down dinner.
For groups of 30+ we run both boats together as a tandem charter, which gives you a single shared crew and the same itinerary across both vessels. Compare both boats side by side on the fleet page if you're trying to decide.
Pricing and what's included
A private Blue Lagoon catamaran charter is from €862 in shoulder season (October–May) and €1,100 in peak (June–September) — flat for the boat, not per person. Both boats share the same rate. Included in the price:
- Professional skipper and crew
- Fuel for the standard route
- All safety equipment and life jackets in every size
- Stand-up paddle boards, snorkelling gear, inflatables
- Gas BBQ, full-size fridge, coolers and ice
- Freshwater deck shower
- Plates, cutlery and glassware for the group
What's not included (all available as opt-in add-ons): catering, bar service, decor for special occasions, photography, transfers from your hotel. We'll quote any of these transparently before you confirm.
How private Blue Lagoon charters differ from shared boat trips
The practical differences come down to three things — pace, crowd, and food. On a shared Blue Lagoon trip you swim during a fixed window, share the lagoon's busiest hours with your boat plus several others, and eat whatever the operator provides on a fixed schedule. On a private catamaran charter you choose when you swim, your skipper times the lagoon visit to the quieter windows, and you bring (or order) the food and drink your group actually wants.
For couples or small groups of two to four, a shared trip is often the better economics. For groups of six or more — and especially eight-plus — the per-head cost of a private charter is comparable while the experience is meaningfully different. The break-even point sits at around six guests in shoulder season and eight in peak.
Best months and best timing
Late May to mid-June and mid-September to early October are the sweet-spot months — warm enough water, long enough days, and shoulder-season pricing. July and August are the warmest but also the busiest; if you want a private Blue Lagoon charter in peak, book Tuesday–Thursday and start the day early. We cover the timing detail in more depth in our Blue Lagoon timing guide.
